Reclaimed Wood Solid Beams

Historic Craftsmanship

Our Hand Hewn Beams crafted from timbers ranging from 125 to over 300 years old. With the arrival of the Industrial Revolution came water and steam-powered circular sawmills instead of axes.

These left distinct circular saw marks that add character to our reclaimed wood Rough Sawn Beams.

From the early 1900s, band saws replaced circular saws for large-scale production.

We also mill historic reclaimed wood in-house to create our Resawn Beams.

The surfaces reflect the methods of their time.

Character Marks

Because these beams originate from vintage sources, variation is inherent.

Hand Hewn beams include marks made by adzes and axes, along with pockets from the mortise and tenon joinery, all crafted by hand.

Rough Sawn Beams are more uniform and consistent, but still carry the weight of history. Saw marks are visible. Color and surface are more consistent.

Character marks and signs of age add to the appeal of reclaimed wood and are part of the material’s authenticity. Each beam is unique in species, tone, grain, and texture. No two beams are the same.

When Solid Beams Are the Right Choice

Solid beams can be less expensive than box beams and may be produced more quickly.

There are also instances where solid beams are necessary when they will need to carry their own weight or be used for structural support.

Availability

Solid reclaimed beams are limited and depend on what can be responsibly salvaged. Sizes, species, and quantities vary. Selection is project-specific, and availability may change.

If your project requires solid reclaimed beams, please contact us directly to discuss current inventory, dimensions, and suitability for your application.

What is a Solid Reclaimed Wood Beam?

A solid reclaimed beam is a timber salvaged from an old structure such as a barn, factory, mill, or agricultural building. Each beam is a single piece of wood, not assembled or laminated.

How old are Solid Reclaimed Beams?

Reclaimed wood can be of varying ages, but we generally carry beams that are between 100 to 250 years old.

Are Reclaimed Wood Solid Beam structural?

These reclaimed solid wood beams were originally used for structural support. They may be incorporated into structural applications today, subject to review by the project’s structural engineer.

How were these beams originally made?

Many were hand hewn from logs using axes and adzes. Others were sawn with early saws, both by early hand tools and in mills. Tool marks and irregular surfaces are typical for these beams and contribute to the overall character.

Will the beams be straight and uniform?

Solid reclaimed beams vary in size and surface texture. There may be some variation in height and width, but they will be straight.

Do Solid Reclaimed Beams have character marks?

Checking, nail holes, surface checks, discoloration, mineral streaking, and other character marks are natural results of age. These are cosmetic and part of the material’s inherent character.

Can the beams be refinished?

Yes. The surface of a Reclaimed Wood Solid Beam can be sanded and/or finished with one of our custom stains.

Are all Solid Reclaimed Wood Beams the same species?

Yes. The surface of a Reclaimed Wood Solid Beam can be sanded and/or finished with one of our custom stains.

How heavy are Solid Reclaimed Beams?

Compared to Box Beams, Reclaimed Wood Solid Beams are quite heavy. Weight varies by species and size. Installation planning and structural support should account for this.

Are Solid Beams always available?

No. Availability is dependent on salvage supply. Inventory changes frequently and cannot be guaranteed for large or repeat orders.

Can I get samples?

Samples may be available when possible. Please reach out to our team to inquire about samples.

What if I need a large quantity or long lengths?

E&K specializes in sourcing oversized beams and large quantities. Long lengths are also available. Early consultation is recommended to confirm availability before finalizing design decisions.
