Hand Hewn Beams

Hand Hewn Box Beams are known for their weight and presence. Each beam reflects original hand-tooled marks and natural aging that create authentic texture and depth. Created by hand, these beams carry the marks of American pioneers who shaped old-growth timbers with axes and adzes, crafting each beam for building barns, factories and homesteads.

At E&K Vintage Wood, we take this reclaimed wood and using our quality standards and proprietary methods create box beams in any dimension that are visually indistinguishable from solid beams, each preserving a piece of American history, carrying a century of use, exposure, and craft into a modern context.

Why Designers Trust E&K for Hand Hewn Box Beams Beams

Bring historic charm to your space with authentic Hand Hewn Box Beams. Carefully reclaimed from historic barns, factories, and structures dating back 100 - 200+ years, these beams showcase unique axe and adze marks with natural patina that make each original and distinctive. Each beam is expertly cleaned and either left natural or finished by skilled artisans to highlight its character while preserving the integrity of the old-growth timber. A few signs of authenticity in Hand Hewn Box Beams include "hewing" marks and natural character marks that run perpendicular to the grain. These authentic beams add architectural drama and focal points to any design project, lending warmth and heritage to contemporary spaces.

Hand Hewn Box Beams Transform Spaces

Hand Hewn Box Beams bring a distinctive presence, offering remarkable versatility in both contemporary and rustic environments. Their richly textured surfaces and authentic character provide a beautiful counterpoint to modern materials. In rustic or traditional settings, the character marks and storied patina create inviting spaces, enhancing farmhouse kitchens and bringing elegance and history to classic retreats. Perfectly suited for luxury homes as well as sophisticated hospitality destinations, Hand Hewn Box Beams draw attention, grounding an interior with handcrafted authenticity. Our sourcing network allows us to deliver beams for large-scale projects, including franchise locations, phased rollouts, and anywhere consistent quality and timeless appeal are required.

What Sets Hand Hewn Box Beams Apart

Hand Hewn Box Beams offer an unmistakable sense of authenticity, bringing to interiors a distinctive character that can't be replicated by Rough Sawn, Planed, or Resawn beams. They have a commanding presence that transforms spaces, creating an inviting atmosphere. The handcrafted nature of Hand Hewn Box Beams offer a connection to a time when hand tools shaped every space. Rough Sawn beams are known by their circular saw marks, giving them a more uniform surface that still has plenty of character. Reclaimed Resawn Beams are re-milled with modern saws, providing an even more uniform appearance and Reclaimed Planed Beams offer a smooth, even finish. All of our beams bring a sense of warmth and character that only Reclaimed Wood can provide. Hand Hewn Box Beams, however, are distinguished by their unique, hand-tooled surface and historical patina, transforming spaces with a sense of heritage and artisan craftsmanship.

What are Hand Hewn Beams?

Hand Hewn Box Beams are original timbers shaped by hand using tools like the adze, dating back 100–200+ years. Each beam shows unique tool marks left by the craftsman who shaped it, giving every piece its own character.

Where do your Hand Hewn Beams come from?

E&K sources beams from barns, mills, and homes built in the 1800s and early 1900s. These structures were made from old-growth timber, offering tight grain and exceptional character. We have one of the largest sourcing networks in the industry and can handle jobs of any size, including multiple locations and phase rollouts.

What’s the difference between Hand Hewn and Rough Sawn Beams?

Hand Hewn Box Beams were carved by hand and have a irregular, textured surface with visible tool marks. Rough Sawn Beams were cut with early circular saws and have a more uniform appearance, but also bring a sense of warmth and original craftsmanship.

Can you match specific sizes or finishes?

Yes. We offer both solid and box beams, both which can be cut to standard sizes. Box beams are crafted with skins cut from solid beams and can be built in any dimension, including oversized beams and trusses. We work closely with designers, architects and homeowners to finish beams which can be left natural or finished in a range of custom stains.

What are Hand Hewn Box Beams and why choose them?

Hand Hewn Box Beams are one to four-sided hollow beams made from the outer skins of solid beams. Using our proprietary techniques, our box beams look very close to solid beams. They’re also lighter weight, cheaper to ship, and easier to install than solid beams.

How are Hand Hewn Beams installed?

Solid beams are mounted using traditional framing methods. Box beams are typically installed to wrap existing structural elements or attached via a support added to the ceiling.

Can Hand Hewn Beams be used in modern interiors?

Absolutely. Hand Hewn Box Beams add character, warmth, and contrast to modern materials.  Whether you’re working on a rustic retreat or a contemporary urban space, Hand Hewn Box Beams bring balance and depth to interiors.
