Understanding Square Feet vs. Linear Feet

Many people confuse square feet with linear feet when ordering reclaimed wood. Square footage measures the total surface area covered, while linear footage accounts for the length of boards needed based on their width. For example, if you're using 5-inch-wide boards to cover 100 square feet, you’ll need more linear feet than if you use 8-inch-wide boards. The calculator simplifies this conversion by factoring in your chosen board widths.

Mixed-Width Reclaimed Wood for Flooring and Siding

Mixed-width reclaimed wood creates a unique, natural look for floors, walls, and siding. Unlike uniform-width boards, mixed-width installations require careful planning to balance aesthetics and material efficiency. For flooring, alternating widths add visual interest and enhance the rustic character of reclaimed wood. For siding, mixed-width boards can mimic traditional barnwood styles or create a custom, textured appearance. Using the calculator, you can determine how different board widths impact the total linear footage needed, ensuring you order the right amount for your project.

Do I need to install a rain screen when using reclaimed siding?

You should always follow the NAAWS best practices. When installing exterior siding, especially wood siding, it’s critical to create a way for moisture to escape. That’s where a rain screen comes in.

A rain screen is a system that creates a ventilated gap between the siding and the wall sheathing. It’s typically made up of vertical furring strips or a drainage mat that lifts the siding slightly off the wall surface. This gap allows air to circulate and water to drain, preventing moisture from getting trapped behind the boards.

Rain screens don’t affect your siding measurements because they only change what’s behind the siding, not the surface area being covered. But they do dramatically improve the durability and long-term performance of your installation. For best results, follow best practices from the North American Architectural Woodwork Standards (NAAWS) or consult with your contractor to ensure the rain screen is properly integrated into your siding design.
